What's a Loofah?
- A Loofah is a genus of tropical and subtropical vines in the cucumber family.
- They are edible, a great addition to a vegetable stew, and taste like a zucchini/cucumber/squash hybrid.
- Mature gourds will turn into gently exfoliating "sponges" that can be used in the shower or as scuff free pan scrubbers.
How to grow Loofahs from seeds?
You need: Cleaned Eggshells, egg carton, glass baking pan and heat producing lamp.
Plan ahead: Dry Loofah seeds need to be soaked in water over night before planting and prefer room temperature water. To keep things low-waste save and clean eggshells and egg cartons, use the shells as "pots" and the cartons as holders.
Planting: Poke a small hole in the bottom of your eggshell (this will help drain excess water). Fill shell with 2/3 of soil. Add drained seeds and cover with a small amount of soil. Place the filled eggshell in a paper egg carton. Mist the soil and seeds well and gently place the glass baking pan over the carton and eggs. To prevent draining water from damaging the surface underneath the carton, place everything on a spare plate. Turn on the lamp and wait until the seeds sprout. With proper watering, seeds should sprout in just 3-4 days.
My Loofahs are growing, now what?Keep an eye on the weather before placing your seedlings outdoors.
Low temperatures will kill your plant babies. Loofahs need a lot of space to spread (above and underground), we recommend planting them directly into the ground, along a fence or on chicken wire. The vines need to be able to climb up. Crack the eggshell that holds your seedling before planting so the roots have plenty of room to grow.
Be a good plant parent:Loofahs need a lot of sunlight (at least 6 hours of direct sun). They like to stay well hydrated and need A LOT of water.
Nutrient rich soil is needed to receive a larger harvest. Once your Loofahs turn brown, become light in weight and you hear seeds rattling inside it's time to harvest. Peel the outside layer, shake and save the seeds for next year.
